Why Articulated Forklifts Are Not VNA Trucks

VNA TruckThe terms articulated forklift and VNA forklift get used interchangeably in a lot of warehouse conversations, and it’s easy to see why. Both operate in narrow aisle environments, both can reach significant lift heights and both are positioned as alternatives to reach truck forklifts in high-density storage setups. But treating them as the same piece of equipment leads to poor purchasing decisions and warehouse layouts that underperform from day one. In this blog post, Bendi Australia will clarify exactly where the two differ and why it matters.

What a True VNA Truck Actually Is

A VNA forklift is a very narrow aisle truck designed to operate in aisle widths that are genuinely extreme. To achieve this, VNA trucks typically work within a guidance system – either wire guidance embedded in the floor, or rail guidance along the racking. The operator doesn’t steer in the conventional sense, as the truck follows a guided path through the aisle automatically. This level of precision comes with significant infrastructure requirements. VNA operations generally demand superflat flooring to tight tolerances, specialist racking configurations and ongoing investment in the guidance system itself. They’re purpose-built for high-throughput, high-density warehouses where the cost of that infrastructure is justified by the scale of the operation.

Where Articulated Forklifts Differ

An articulated forklift achieves narrow aisle performance through a fundamentally different mechanism. Rather than relying on guidance systems, it uses a pivoting joint between the front and rear of the truck that allows the mast to articulate sideways. This means the operator can drive into an aisle, rotate the forks to face the racking, and place or retrieve a pallet without the truck needing to turn. Bendi’s articulated forklifts can operate in aisles as small as 1.8 metres without guidance systems or superflat floors, which significantly reduces the infrastructure commitment required. They also move freely between indoor and outdoor environments, allowing the same truck to unload a trailer in the yard and then place pallets into racking up to 12.5 metres high inside the warehouse.

Why the Distinction Matters When Choosing Equipment

Choosing between an articulated forklift and a VNA forklift has significant cost and operational implications. Some of the key practical differences worth weighing up include:

  • VNA trucks require guided aisle infrastructure, while articulated forklifts do not
  • Superflat flooring is a prerequisite for VNA operations, but not for articulated forklift use
  • Articulated forklifts offer indoor and outdoor versatility from a single machine
  • VNA systems suit very high-throughput operations where infrastructure investment is viable
  • Articulated forklifts deliver meaningful storage density gains at a lower total cost of entry

For most Australian warehouses, particularly those that need flexibility, an articulated forklift delivers the most benefit. Bendi Australia’s range includes models suited to everything from standard warehouse environments through to cold storage applications operating at temperatures as low as -30°C, making it easy to find an option that works for your warehouse.
